Anything you want
Friday, March 23rd, 2007Passing by a Freelancer’s Union poster in the streets of Brooklyn, I had the fleeting thought that it’d be nice to know more about the issues involved in running the Freelancer’s Union programs. And then the thought, it’d be possible, if we wanted, for the people who are part of Freelancer’s Union, customers, if you will, to vote on how Freelancer’s Union is run.
And then I thought, well I don’t really have much time in my life to learn about Freelancer’s Union. Which gets to the idea: why not have all returning or regular customers (of health insurance or shoe repair) vote if they choose on how the business is run?
Yes, I know, you can think of many reasons. But let’s strike one reason off the list: just because customers can be involved in a business, doesn’t mean they’d choose to be. So you’d provide a choice to your customers. Instead of vote with your feet or put a suggestion in the suggestion box, we’re adding a third choice. Decide what happens. Only a few customers would choose to be involved in any business. When I lived in Queens I would’ve wanted to have a say in the local diner half a block from my house, because I spent so much time there and enjoyed it so much. Maybe I’d want a say in the local supermarket a block from my house in Brooklyn, because of all the reasons I hardly ever use it. I’d start using it if there were some changes.
Anyway, just suggesting that even if customers could get involved in business decisions, most of them wouldn’t choose to. You’d get the serious ones who really care.
