Lemons into lemonade
Tuesday, September 4th, 2007Someone recently used Questions Website to turn lemons into lemonade, literally. I was delighted. Here’s what happened:
Q: What’s something I’m not looking forward to, or an upcoming situation I’d like to improve?
A: I don’t like the taste of lemons
[The computer asked for a more positive phrasing, and "enjoy the taste of the lemons I was given by my mother-in-law" would be a more positive answer. But the questions and answers worked anyway.]
Q: Do I want help for what to do about I don’t like the taste of lemons? (yes/no)
A: yes
Q: How are you feeling about I don’t like the taste of lemons (on a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is the worst and 10 is the best?)
A: 1
Q: Okay, when’s the next time you’ll do something about I don’t like the taste of lemons?
A: the next time I eat a lemon
Q: What’s something I’d like to get from I don’t like the taste of lemons the next time I eat a lemon that’ll make me go wow?
A: perhaps something sweet and delicious
Q: How are you feeling now about I don’t like the taste of lemons (on a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is the worst and 10 is the best?)
5
[This "feeling" question is repeated by an algorithm because once your rating improves enough, the questions will stop.]
Q: What’s a strength of mine — something I’m great at — and it also excites me?
A: making juice
Q: What’s important to me about making juice?
A: end up with a tasty beverage
Q: How are you feeling now about I don’t like the taste of lemons (on a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is the worst and 10 is the best?)
6
Q: Looking back now at my questions and answers, what have I learned or discovered?
[This question was asked because the rating had gone from 1 to 6, which is a big improvement. If the rating hadn't improved so much, the next question would have probably gotten the same response:
What's one thing I can do with making juice to have I don't like the taste of lemons and perhaps something sweet and delicious?]
A: I can make lemonade
Whether or not this person answering the questions was serious about their situation, this is a perfect demonstration of how the website works. Almost every answer seems this “obvious” to an outside observer and is almost always a big discovery, learning or remembering for the person who is truly answering the questions.
Go ahead, try it. And sign up, so you can store and view your questions and answers any time. It’s kept anonymous, so no one else, not even me, will know it’s you.
